ARABICA COFFEE
Arabica coffee comes from the beans of a Coffea arabica plant, which originated in Ethiopia.
Arabica makes up a huge 70 % of the world’s coffee production today. It is generally sweeter and has tones of fruits, florals, chocolate and nuts. Generally, it is more expensive than Robusta. This is because it is much more delicate and needs more specific cultivation requirements, such as weather and altitude, to grow. Coffee beans from the Arabica species are generally oval, have a pronounced center crease and are larger than Robusta beans.
TASTE
Arabica has a sweet taste and higher acidity but with comfortable flavor of fruits, chocolate and Carmel taste and much lower Caffein than Robusta Coffee. It also has twice the amount of sugar in it than the Robusta type.
Arabica has a 1.5% Caffeine levels in comparison to the 2.7% in Robusta. This lower Caffeine levels among other factors is what makes it a favorite among coffee lovers for its settled and sweet taste.
If you enjoy drinking instant coffee? Well, that’s probably all Robusta. Robusta is mostly used as part of espresso blends – specifically Italian style blends to give it the crema or the foamy look. One thing to note is despite the association with Arabica of being higher quality, and Robusta as being lower quality, it’s not always the case. Top notch specialty Robusta coffee will usually taste as good as or better than low end Arabica. For most roasters and blenders Robusta is usually used as a filler or cost reducer.
