ROBUSTA COFFEE
Robusta Coffee is coffee made from the beans of the Coffea canephora plant, the origins of which are in Africa.
Robusta coffee accounts for 30 % of the world’s coffee production and it is mostly grown in Vietnam, India, West Africa, Indonesia and other parts of South East Asia. The Robusta coffee tree is much easier to look after and is much more resilient to adverse weather and disease, which is the main reason why it is on average one third cheaper than Arabica (2016). One other thing, Robusta is good for the caffeine junkies as it generally has about 25% more caffeine. Coffee beans from the Robusta species are generally smaller and more circular than Arabica beans, they are also usually paler and the center crease is less pronounced.
TASTE
A bitter taste and higher Caffein levels with lower acidity with a woody or burnt rubber taste to it. It has 2.7% Caffeine content in comparison to the 1.5% in Arabica. It has half the amount of sugar the Arabica does which makes it a less favorite among many coffee lovers. Robusta still has its followers and lovers especially those in the Middle East who prefer a dark and bitter taste coffee.
If you enjoy drinking instant coffee? Well, that’s probably all Robusta. Robusta is mostly used as part of espresso blends – specifically Italian style blends to give it the crema or the foamy look. One thing to note is despite the association with Arabica of being higher quality, and Robusta as being lower quality, it’s not always the case. Top notch specialty Robusta coffee will usually taste as good as or better than low end Arabica. For most roasters and blenders Robusta is usually used as a filler or cost reducer
